The African Democratic Congress, ADC candidate for Abakaliki North State Constituency in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Arc. Joseph Ogbaga, has called on Nigerians to intensify efforts toward protecting their votes and strengthening civic participation as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ogbaga said Democracy Day should serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and the continued need for citizens to actively participate in governance beyond election periods.
He noted that democracy can only thrive when the electorate remain vigilant, engaged, and committed to holding leaders accountable at all levels of government.
“Democracy is not only about casting ballots during elections; it is about ensuring that those votes are protected and that the will of the people is reflected in governance,” he said.
Ogbaga stressed that credible elections remain the foundation of national development, adding that every vote must count to guarantee trust in the democratic process.
According to him, Abakaliki North constituency deserves purposeful representation that prioritises the needs of the people, including improved education, youth empowerment, healthcare delivery, and rural development.
He further urged constituents to take active interest in governance by engaging their elected representatives and participating in community decision-making processes.
“The strength of democracy lies in the people. When citizens are informed, united, and active, it becomes difficult for democracy to be undermined,” he added.
The ADC candidate also pledged, if elected, to promote regular town hall meetings across the seven wards in Abakaliki North to enhance transparency and grassroots participation in governance.
He reaffirmed his commitment to youth and women empowerment programmes, as well as legislative initiatives aimed at improving economic opportunities within the constituency.
Ogbaga urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending democratic values, describing participation and vigilance as key pillars for national progress.
