Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has picked former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, as his running mate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, in a move aimed at strengthening North–South political balance within the opposition coalition.
The development, according to party sources, followed weeks of closed-door negotiations within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition structure, where stakeholders reportedly weighed several options before settling on Amaechi as the consensus choice.
With the decision, Atiku is expected to lead the presidential ticket while Amaechi represents the South-South geopolitical zone, a pairing insiders say is designed to boost the coalition’s national appeal and counter rival political alignments ahead of the poll.
Sources familiar with the arrangement said the selection also reflects strategic considerations aimed at consolidating support across key voting blocs, particularly in the North-East and South-South regions.
Although there had been earlier speculation that Amaechi was not interested in a vice-presidential role, political associates maintained that consultations and reassurances from key political actors eventually influenced his acceptance of the nomination.
The ADC coalition, which has been undergoing internal restructuring following recent defections and realignments, is expected to formally unveil its presidential and vice-presidential candidates after final ratification by its leadership organs.
Atiku, in recent political engagements, has repeatedly called for unity within opposition ranks, warning against what he described as attempts to weaken alternative political platforms ahead of 2027.
