The Ezza Ezekuna Development Association (EEDA) has declared that the governorship of Ebonyi State should remain in Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone until 2031 in line with the state's established zoning arrangement, while also throwing its weight behind Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for a second term in office.
The position was made known on Thursday in Abakaliki during a press conference where the association formally unveiled its mission, vision and policy direction on governance, political equity and issues affecting Ezza people.
The speech was read by Prof. Chika Onwe, former Commissioner for Information and State Orientation in Ebonyi State, on behalf of the association. The address was signed by the National President of EEDA, Chief Kingsley Akam, and the National Secretary, Comrade Uchechukwu Ede
Speaking during the briefing, the association described itself as a socio-cultural, socio-economic and socio-political organisation established to promote the unity, welfare, development and collective interests of Ezza people across Ebonyi State and beyond.
According to the group, following its registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in April 2024, EEDA has emerged as a legally recognised platform committed to strategic advocacy, constructive engagement and the advancement of issues affecting Ezza communities.
On the issue of political succession in the state, the association said it remains firmly committed to the principles of justice, fairness, equity and political stability, insisting that the zoning arrangement that has guided the state's political leadership should be respected.
"The governorship of Ebonyi State remains, in accordance with the prevailing zoning understanding, in Ebonyi North until 2031. No reasonable Ezza person, properly informed of the history of our state and properly committed to the collective stability of Ebonyi, would oppose this arrangement," the association stated.
It stressed that political ambition should never be allowed to undermine the peace and stability of the state, noting that any discussion regarding future political succession must be conducted within the framework of established political agreements and mutual respect among stakeholders.
The group also expressed strong support for the administration of Governor Nwifuru, commending his efforts in promoting peace, human capital development, infrastructure renewal, youth empowerment, educational advancement and conflict resolution across various communities in the state.
EEDA said the governor's developmental strides and commitment to inclusive governance have earned him the confidence and support of Ezza people.
"We declare our irrevocable endorsement of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for a second term as Governor of Ebonyi State. This endorsement is made freely, without coercion and without reservation. It is grounded in his demonstrated commitment to peace, development and inclusive governance," the group stated.
The association further pledged to partner with the state government and other stakeholders in efforts aimed at fostering peace, development and unity across Ebonyi State.
On a recent communiqué issued by a group known as the Umuekumenyi Leaders' Council, EEDA questioned the legitimacy of the body, alleging that it lacked legal recognition and did not represent the collective position of Ezza people.
The association maintained that EEDA remains the duly constituted and legally recognised platform for articulating the views and interests of Ezza Ezekuna people.
It reiterated its commitment to promoting unity among Ezza communities and advancing a comprehensive development agenda through collaboration with traditional institutions, youth groups, professionals, business leaders, academics and political stakeholders.
The association called on Ezza sons and daughters both at home and in the diaspora to embrace unity, reject divisive tendencies and support efforts aimed at building a stronger Ezza nation and a more prosperous Ebonyi State.
EEDA said it would continue to provide leadership and advocacy on matters affecting Ezza people while pursuing policies that promote peace, development and social progress.
