The true measure of governance is not merely the number of roads, bridges, or public buildings constructed, but the extent to which the government improves the lives of ordinary people. In Akwa Ibom State, Governor Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, PhD, has demonstrated this philosophy through people-centred policies and humanitarian interventions anchored on the ARISE Agenda.
A major milestone of the administration was the creation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, a strategic institution dedicated to social protection, poverty reduction, and citizen empowerment. Through this ministry, humanitarian programmes have become powerful tools for economic development and social inclusion.
One of the administration's most notable achievements is the Senator Oluremi Tinubu ARISE Senior Citizens Home, established to provide healthcare, companionship, and recreational services for elderly citizens. The facility reflects a government that values and protects its senior population.
In addition, the ARISE Initiative for the Elderly has provided direct financial support to thousands of senior citizens across the 31 Local Government Areas. Beyond improving their welfare, these payments stimulate economic activity within local communities.
The ARISE Compassionate Homes Programme has also transformed lives by providing safe and dignified housing for widows, vulnerable families, and the elderly. Hundreds of homes have already been completed and handed over. Beyond addressing housing needs, the programme has created jobs for artisans, suppliers, and construction workers, demonstrating how humanitarian programmes can generate economic benefits.
Food security has remained another priority. Through the ARISE Food Security Programme, staple food items have been distributed to vulnerable households across the state. With more than 650,000 households benefiting, the initiative has helped cushion the effects of economic hardship and rising food costs while promoting social stability.
Governor Eno's commitment to youth empowerment is equally commendable. Through the ARISE Youth Empowerment Initiative, the Empowerment Assistance Programme, and business grant schemes, thousands of young people have received training, financial support, equipment, and vehicles to establish sustainable livelihoods.
These interventions are helping to reduce unemployment, encourage entrepreneurship, and create a new generation of economically productive citizens. Rather than fostering dependency, they promote self-reliance and long-term prosperity.
The Business Grant Programme further underscores the administration's focus on grassroots economic development. By supporting small businesses, the government is encouraging enterprise growth, job creation, and wealth generation across the state.
What makes these interventions unique is their integration into the broader ARISE Agenda. Rather than isolated welfare programmes, they form part of a comprehensive strategy that combines compassion with economic empowerment.
There are important lessons here for other states. Governments should institutionalize social protection, connect welfare programmes with economic opportunities, and recognize that investment in people is as important as investment in infrastructure.
At a time when many Nigerians face economic challenges, Akwa Ibom has shown that compassionate governance can deliver meaningful results. Through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the ARISE Agenda, thousands of citizens have experienced improved living conditions, economic support, and renewed hope.
These achievements provide a compelling case for Governor Pastor Umo Bassey Eno's second term. His administration has demonstrated that governance works best when development is measured not only by physical projects but by the positive impact on human lives.
As Akwa Ibom continues its development journey, the Governor's humanitarian model stands as a worthy example for other states and a testament to the power of leadership driven by compassion, inclusion, and sustainable development.
