The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State chapter, has urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to stay away from the political affairs of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Chairman of the council in the state, Comrade Douglas Ochishi, made the call on Saturday while addressing journalists at his office in Abakaliki.
Ochishi was reacting to reports alleging that the FCT minister had expressed interest in influencing the political landscape of Ebonyi State in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the next general elections.
He said Ebonyi people were united by a common cultural heritage and shared values and remained committed to preserving the peace, stability and progress currently being enjoyed in the state.
According to him, the people of Ebonyi have continued to support the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru because of its investments in youth empowerment, infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and inclusive governance.
"Ebonyi State is peaceful and progressive under the leadership of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru. Our people will continue to protect the unity, harmony and democratic values that define our political environment," he said.
The youth leader maintained that the people of the state were politically conscious and capable of making independent decisions without external influence.
"The people of Ebonyi State cannot be swayed by money politics, political intimidation or external pressure. The youths remain committed to supporting good governance and sustaining the developmental strides being recorded across the state," Ochishi added.
He called on political leaders across the country to respect the autonomy of states, uphold the principles of federalism and promote issue-based politics anchored on development, peace, national unity, economic prosperity and mutual respect.
Ochishi also urged political stakeholders to avoid actions and statements capable of creating unnecessary tension, division or political unrest, stressing that the collective interest of the people should always take precedence over individual ambitions.
"The future of our democracy depends on responsible leadership, constructive engagement and respect for the will of the people.
"Ebonyi youths remain committed to safeguarding the peace and stability of our state before, during and after the 2027 elections," he said.
