In a pulsating finale that will linger in memory as one of the most electrifying showdowns in recent regional basketball history, Enugu State produced a breathtaking fourth-quarter surge to dethrone hosts Ebonyi State 45–42 and clinch the South-East Invitational Basketball Championship in Abakaliki.
Under the dazzling lights of the newly commissioned Richard Idike Basketball Court at Ebonyi Mall, the Coal City boys defied pressure, crowd hostility, and a stubborn Ebonyi defence to script a dramatic comeback that flipped the contest on its head in the dying moments of a fiercely contested final.
Ebonyi State, roared on by a partisan home crowd, had controlled proceedings for large stretches of the encounter, dictating tempo with disciplined ball movement and aggressive perimeter defending. For three quarters, the hosts looked destined to crown their home advantage with regional glory, as Enugu struggled to convert possession into points in a tightly-guarded half-court battle.
But basketball, in its purest form, is often a game of momentum and Enugu’s moment arrived with explosive force.
Trailing heading into the closing stretch, the visitors unlocked a higher gear, shifting from cautious build-up play to rapid transition offense. Their backcourt orchestrated a sudden offensive rhythm, while defensive pressure intensified into full-court disruption, forcing turnovers and hurried shot selections from the fatigued Ebonyi lineup.

The triumph crowned a disciplined three-day campaign for the Coal City side in the South-East Invitational Tournament organized by the South-East Basketball Association, a competition widely praised for elevating the profile of grassroots basketball in the region.
Earlier in the third-place encounter, Imo State edged Anambra State 38–35 in another tightly fought duel that underscored the growing competitiveness of basketball across the South-East corridor, where margins between victory and defeat continue to shrink.
Coaches from both finalists lauded the standard of play and competitive intensity, describing the tournament as a vital platform for talent discovery and elite exposure. Enugu tactician Olumide Austin hailed his players’ “championship mentality under pressure,” while Imo State coach Victor Oguguo emphasized the need for consistent fixtures to sustain player development and tactical growth.
Beyond the scoreboard, stakeholders also turned attention to infrastructure, commending the South-East representative on the Nigeria Basketball Federation board, Chief Ugo Udezue, for facilitating the construction of the Richard Idike Basketball Court.
The facility, they noted, represents a symbolic leap forward for sporting development in Ebonyi State and a potential hub for future national and regional competitions.
As confetti settled and the echoes of celebration faded into the Abakaliki night, one truth remained undeniable: Enugu did not just win a final but they authored a comeback script that embodied resilience, rhythm, and ruthless late-game brilliance.
