The Presidency on Wednesday said former Anambra State Governor and leading opposition figure, Peter Obi, lacks the political strength, leadership credentials and governance record required to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the assertion in a statement posted on his verified X account, where he dismissed Obi's chances of unseating the President when Nigerians return to the polls in 2027.
Onanuga described Obi as a "copy-and-paste politician" and argued that the former governor failed to demonstrate exceptional leadership during his eight years in office in Anambra State.
According to him, Obi's record as governor does not compare with that of President Tinubu, whom he credited with laying the foundation for Lagos State's sustained growth through far-reaching reforms, strategic planning and infrastructure development.
"Peter Obi has never shown original, authentic thinking. He is a copy-and-paste politician. Willie Obiano, his successor, said Obi failed spectacularly in providing security in the state," Onanuga stated.
The presidential aide maintained that Nigeria requires a leader with vision, innovation and a proven track record of achievement, insisting that Obi does not possess the qualities needed to challenge Tinubu successfully.
"Nigeria deserves a leader who can see beyond the ordinary, a leader who is a proven thinker and achiever. Peter Obi is no match for President Bola Tinubu. They are not on the same level," he added.
Onanuga further contrasted Obi's administration in Anambra with Tinubu's tenure as governor of Lagos State, claiming that many of the policies and development initiatives introduced by the President continue to drive economic growth and urban development in the state years after he left office.
The latest remarks underscore the growing political exchanges between the Presidency and opposition figures as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has consistently defended his record in office, citing achievements in fiscal discipline, education, healthcare and infrastructure development during his administration in Anambra State.
His supporters have also argued that his message of accountability, transparency and prudent management of public resources continues to resonate with many Nigerians amid the country's economic challenges.
However, the Presidency has repeatedly dismissed suggestions that Obi poses a significant electoral threat to Tinubu, insisting that the President's political experience, nationwide support base and governance record place him in a stronger position ahead of the next presidential contest.
The exchange is expected to further heighten political debates as parties and key political actors begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
