A political ally of former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Aslam Aliyu, has resigned from the ADC and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), expressing confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure re-election in the 2027 presidential poll and remain in office until 2031.
Aliyu announced her resignation and defection in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, describing the ADC as a "hoax" and urging her supporters to join the APC.
She said her decision followed nearly two decades of active involvement in opposition politics, which she claimed had failed to provide Nigerians with a credible roadmap for national development.
According to her, the opposition has been unable to articulate practical and sustainable solutions to the country's numerous socio-economic and political challenges.
"After almost twenty years of working hard to make progress, it is very clear that the opposition does not have a real plan for development or a practical and lasting solution to save the country," Aliyu said.
She accused opposition leaders of lacking unity and focusing more on criticising the Federal Government than presenting alternative policies capable of improving the lives of Nigerians.
Aliyu further maintained that the ADC had no concrete agenda to address the nation's pressing challenges, stressing that Nigerians were yearning for leaders with practical ideas rather than political rhetoric.
"Nigeria is tired of political actors who merely pose for photographs and engage in political theatrics without genuine commitment to the country's development," she stated.
Declaring her support for President Tinubu's second-term ambition, Aliyu said she was convinced the President would emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election.
"There is no vacancy in Aso Rock Villa because President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election by the grace of Almighty Allah," she declared.
She also called on her supporters and other Nigerians who share her political ideals to align with the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Aliyu's defection comes amid increasing political realignments and consultations across the country's major political parties as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections. .
