The Ebonyi Central Youth Alliance has defended the Senator representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial District, Engr. Kenneth Emeka Eze, against reports questioning the ownership and value of his residence, insisting that the property was acquired long before he ventured into partisan politics.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its National President, Comrade Timothy Nwafor, the group described as "misleading and lacking in due diligence" a report allegedly aired by Arise Television which suggested that the senator's mansion was too luxurious to have been acquired through legitimate means.
The youth body maintained that Senator Eze's wealth was built over several decades of successful private-sector enterprise, stressing that his achievements in business predated his election into the National Assembly.
"We state categorically that the house in question was built long before Senator Kenneth Emeka Eze became a senator.
"Leadership is not measured by the size of a mansion but by achievements and the positive impact made on the lives of the people," the statement read.
The alliance expressed disappointment that a national media organisation would allegedly air such claims without what it described as adequate verification, arguing that responsible journalism demands fairness, balance and thorough investigation before publication.
According to the group, attempts to link the senator's residence to his current public office were misleading and ignored his longstanding career as an engineer, entrepreneur, consultant and investor.
The statement noted that Senator Eze began his professional career with the National Engineering and Technical Company (NETCO), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), after completing the National Youth Service Corps scheme.
It said his performance earned him a contract appointment with the company, where he worked for four years before establishing CRISPMOON Nigeria Limited and CRISPMOON Technology Nigeria Limited, companies that provided engineering consultancy, information and communication technology, and oil and gas services.
The group further stated that the firms secured consultancy and technical service contracts with multinational oil companies, financial institutions and government agencies based on professional competence and industry experience.
According to the statement, Senator Eze later expanded his entrepreneurial interests with the establishment of ZIONGATES Construction Company Nigeria Limited, which specialises in construction, engineering and technical services for corporate organisations, government agencies and private clients.
"By the time he ventured into politics, Senator Kenneth Emeka Eze had already attained financial independence through years of legitimate business, entrepreneurship and strategic investments," the group stated.
The alliance questioned the basis for the controversy, asking whether there was any constitutional provision prohibiting a successful businessman from retaining assets acquired before assuming public office.
"Is there any constitutional provision requiring a senator to sell his house before becoming a senator? Is it the most expensive house in Nigeria?" the statement queried.
Beyond defending the senator's personal integrity, the youth organisation urged Nigerians to assess his public service record on the basis of his legislative contributions and constituency development initiatives.
It cited scholarship awards, youth empowerment programmes, facilitation of federal employment opportunities and various constituency projects as evidence of what it described as Senator Eze's commitment to improving the welfare of his constituents.
The alliance called on media organisations to uphold the principles of accuracy, fairness and responsible journalism by ensuring that reports are properly verified before publication.
It also urged members of the public to disregard what it described as politically motivated attempts to discredit the senator through "media sensationalism aimed at finding fault where there is none."
