The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has urged residents of flood-prone communities in the state to strictly comply with safety advisories issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and other relevant government agencies as the peak of the rainy season approaches.
The appeal formed part of the resolutions reached at the end of the Congress of the union held at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre, Abakaliki, on Thursday.
In a communiqué jointly signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Nwafor Samson, and the Secretary, Dr. Perculia Chinaza John, the union expressed concern over the increasing risk of flooding during the rainy season and called on residents to take proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.
According to the communiqué, residents should avoid activities capable of worsening flood incidents, particularly the blockage of waterways and drainage channels with refuse and other materials.
The Congress stressed that adherence to safety protocols and environmental sanitation measures would help reduce the devastating impact of flooding on communities across the state.
The union also urged communities, local authorities and relevant agencies to intensify public awareness campaigns on flood prevention and emergency preparedness to minimise potential losses.
The communiqué was issued at the end of the Congress, which deliberated on key issues affecting Ebonyi State and the journalism profession.
The drafting committee for the communiqué comprised Comrade Uchenna Inya, Comrade Lucy Anyim and Comrade Sower Egwu Inya.
