The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has entered into a strategic partnership with Byblos Travels and Tours Nigeria Limited to provide discounted domestic and international travel services for sports journalists across the country.
The partnership, formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja, is expected to ease the financial burden of travel on SWAN members by offering reduced airfares, visa advisory services, accommodation support and other travel-related benefits.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, described the agreement as a major milestone in the association's commitment to improving the welfare and professional capacity of its members.
Benjamin said the leadership carefully reviewed the contents of the agreement before endorsing it, stressing that the partnership aligns with SWAN's objective of creating opportunities that directly benefit sports journalists.
He commended veteran sports journalist, Mr. Abdulgafar Oladimeji, for facilitating the partnership, noting that the initiative would significantly improve members' access to local and international sporting events.
"Anything that will benefit our members, we are always interested in it. Having gone through the contents of this agreement, I believe it will help our members in no small measure," Benjamin said.
He lamented the high cost of domestic air travel in Nigeria, observing that many sports journalists have been forced to embark on long and sometimes risky road journeys to cover sporting events because they could not afford flight tickets.
According to him, the new arrangement will reduce travel costs and encourage wider participation of Nigerian sports journalists in major competitions around the world.
Benjamin expressed optimism that more members would now be able to cover international events, including the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Leader of the Byblos delegation, Mr. Abubakar Nasrudeen, said the company was pleased to partner with SWAN in making travel more affordable and accessible for sports journalists.
Nasrudeen explained that Byblos Travels and Tours, a company specialising in ticketing, visa processing and tour packages, would provide SWAN members with exclusive travel deals not ordinarily available to the general public.
He assured the association of the company's commitment to supporting members with discounted airfares, visa processing assistance and tailored travel packages while exploring additional opportunities that would further enhance members' travel experience.
Also speaking, former Secretary of SWAN Kano State Chapter, Mr. Abdulgafar Oladimeji, who facilitated the agreement, praised the leadership of the association for embracing initiatives that promote members' welfare and professional growth.
Oladimeji said one of the major achievements of the current SWAN leadership was restoring unity and stability within the association, creating an environment that attracts strategic partnerships capable of transforming the fortunes of sports journalists.
He noted that the agreement comes at a critical period as preparations intensify for major global sporting events, adding that improved access to affordable travel would enhance the quality of sports journalism and expand international exposure for Nigerian sports reporters.
The partnership is expected to improve the mobility of sports journalists, increase their participation in local and international sporting competitions, and strengthen sports reportage across Nigeria.
