Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to promoting women's participation in politics, urging women across the country to take centre stage in leadership by presenting competent candidates for elective and appointive positions.
The governor made the call on Thursday at a reception held in Yenagoa to mark the 60th birthday anniversary of the member representing Sagbama Constituency III in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Ebizi Ndiomu-Brown.
Represented by the Deputy Governor, Peter Akpe, Diri said his administration would continue to support initiatives aimed at increasing women's involvement in governance and decision-making.
He stressed that while government remained committed to gender inclusion, women also had a responsibility to present qualified and capable candidates who could compete favourably and make meaningful contributions to national development.
"As a government, we will continue to identify with the advocacy and other efforts encouraging women to come into politics. We need competent women who can do the job, deliver on their mandate and move our society forward," the governor said.
Diri described Ndiomu-Brown as one of the few women whose performance in public office had distinguished her, expressing confidence that she would continue to contribute positively to the development of Bayelsa State.
Earlier, at a thanksgiving service held at the Divine Grace Model Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Kpansia, Yenagoa, Akpe described the celebrant as an embodiment of God's grace.
Preaching on the theme, "From Strength to Strength," the deputy governor urged Christians to depend on God as the ultimate source of strength, noting that divine empowerment was essential for accomplishing impactful assignments and overcoming life's challenges.
He congratulated Ndiomu-Brown on attaining the milestone age of 60, describing it as a significant moment worthy of thanksgiving, and prayed for God's continued blessings, good health and greater accomplishments in her life.
Chairman of the reception, Victor Ombu, commended the lawmaker for upholding the values of her family and making her parents proud through dedicated public service.
Responding, Ndiomu-Brown expressed gratitude to Governor Diri, Deputy Governor Akpe, colleagues, friends and members of her family for celebrating the milestone with her. She also thanked God for His faithfulness throughout her six decades of life.
The event attracted several prominent personalities, including the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, judges, political leaders, traditional rulers, business executives, commissioners and other dignitaries from within and outside Bayelsa State.
