Governor Francis Nwifuru has directed the immediate removal from office of the state Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Mbam.
The directive was contained in a Public Service Announcement issued and signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Monday Uzor, on Saturday in Abakaliki.
According to the announcement, the governor also directed the former commissioner to immediately hand over all government property in his possession, including his official vehicle, to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The governor further directed Mbam to transfer the responsibilities of the Ministry of Works to the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, pending further directives from the state government.
The statement read in part: “The Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, FNIOB, FCAI, GGCEHF has directed the immediate removal from office of the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam.”
It added that the affected official was to hand over “all Government property in his possession including his official vehicle to the Secretary to the State Government” and transfer responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary in the ministry.
The announcement did not state the specific reason for the governor’s decision to remove the commissioner from office.
The development came against the backdrop of the administration’s stated emphasis on infrastructure delivery and effective governance.
The state government’s official Ministry of Works profile identifies the ministry as responsible for construction services and infrastructure development across Ebonyi State.
The governor, according to the statement assured residents that his administration remained focused on “delivering effective governance and improving public infrastructure.”
The latest directive also followed an earlier decision in February 2026, when Governor Nwifuru suspended Mbam and the Commissioner for Infrastructure Development for Concession, Engr. Ogbonnaya Obasi-Abara, over alleged dereliction of duty.
That earlier suspension was announced by Uzor and included directives for the affected commissioners to surrender government property and official vehicles to the SSG.
However, the Saturday September 19 announcement specifically described the latest action as removal from office, rather than suspension.
