Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Enugu State and the South-East, Hon. Sydney Okechukwu Edeh, on Saturday cast his ballot in the Enugu State Local Government Council election, expressing confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would record a landslide victory.
Edeh, who is also Deputy National Publicity Secretary of ALGON, voted at the Community School, Obeagu, Ugbawka, in Nkanu East Local Government Area.
Speaking shortly after voting, Edeh commended the turnout of voters and described the peaceful conduct of the exercise as encouraging.
“I am particularly encouraged by the large turnout of voters. It is a clear indication of the people’s interest in the democratic process. We are also happy that the exercise is progressing peacefully,” he said.
Edeh commended the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) for conducting the election, while also applauding Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for what he described as creating an enabling environment for citizens to exercise their democratic rights.
He equally praised security agencies for maintaining peace and order at polling centres.
The ALGON leader urged voters, political parties, candidates and their supporters to remain peaceful and respect the electoral process before, during and after the announcement of results.
He specifically called on stakeholders to ensure that voters were allowed to exercise their franchise without intimidation or disruption.
The Enugu State Local Government Council election is being conducted across the state’s 17 local government areas for chairmanship and councillorship positions.
