The Federal Government has acknowledged organised labour’s request for a wage award, upward review of salaries and allowances, and the constitution of a committee for the 2027 national minimum wage review, saying it is awaiting further directives from higher authorities.
The position was contained in a September 29, 2026 letter signed by the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Fanimu Yakubu, in response to a September 21 letter from the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side).
Yakubu said the Budget Office recognised the concerns raised by the council over the rising cost of living and its impact on workers’ purchasing power and family welfare.
“The Budget Office of the Federation further appreciates the council’s commitment to constructive dialogue and industrial harmony and awaits further directives from higher authorities to finally resolve the matter,” he stated.
The response, however, did not indicate approval of the requests or announce any specific wage adjustment, leaving further action subject to directives from the appropriate authorities.
The matter was also copied to the Chairman and members of the Presidential Salary Committee, which is expected to be apprised of the issues raised by the labour council.
The development comes amid renewed engagement between the government and organised labour over workers’ remuneration and welfare as discussions on the 2027 minimum wage review approach.
Yakubu concluded the letter by assuring the council of his “highest consideration.”
