Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has been commended for his administration's commitment to grassroots development, restoration of peace and security, infrastructure renewal, youth empowerment and human capital development across the state.
A member of the Ebonyi State Rural Access Road Authority (RURA), Hon. Ifeanyi Edeh, gave the commendation during an interview with journalists in Abakaliki at the weekend, describing the governor's performance as impressive and reflective of his determination to improve the welfare and living conditions of the people.
Edeh said Nwifuru had demonstrated purposeful leadership through policies and programmes targeting critical developmental needs of communities, particularly rural areas that had experienced years of infrastructural and socioeconomic challenges.
He identified the restoration of peace and stability in previously troubled communities as one of the administration's notable achievements, arguing that sustainable development could only thrive in an atmosphere of security and communal harmony.
According to him, the governor's engagement with traditional rulers, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders has contributed to resolving longstanding communal disputes and restoring confidence among residents of affected areas.
He said the restoration of peace had created opportunities for economic activities, social interaction and the implementation of government projects in communities previously affected by insecurity.
The RURA member also praised the governor's interventions in the traditional institution, particularly the construction of modern residential facilities for traditional rulers across communities in the state.
He described the initiative as a demonstration of the administration's recognition of the traditional institution as an indispensable partner in grassroots governance, conflict resolution, cultural preservation and community mobilisation.
On rural infrastructure, Edeh applauded the administration's two-kilometre road development initiative in communities across the state, noting that the programme was designed to address the longstanding challenge of poor accessibility in rural settlements.
He said improved road networks would facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce, enhance commercial activities, reduce transportation difficulties and connect rural communities to markets, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services.
He maintained that the initiative aligned with the governor's People's Charter of Needs philosophy, which places the developmental aspirations of ordinary citizens at the centre of governance.
Edeh further commended Nwifuru for prioritising youth empowerment, employment generation and economic inclusion, saying the administration had created opportunities for young people to develop their skills, pursue their entrepreneurial interests and contribute meaningfully to the state's economy.
He noted that investment in the productive capacity of young people remained critical to addressing unemployment, reducing social vulnerabilities and stimulating sustainable economic growth.
The authority member also described the governor's scholarship programme as a far-reaching investment in the state's human capital, citing the sponsorship of more than 1,000 Ebonyi indigenes for postgraduate studies, including master's and doctoral degree programmes in Nigeria and abroad.
According to him, the scholarship initiative would expand access to advanced education, strengthen professional capacity and produce a new generation of highly skilled manpower capable of contributing to the development of Ebonyi State and Nigeria.
On workers' welfare, Edeh commended the administration for addressing outstanding pension and gratuity obligations, particularly payments covering retirees dating back to 1996, when Ebonyi State was created.
He said the intervention had brought relief to retired public servants who had endured years of uncertainty over their entitlements, describing the payment of accumulated retirement benefits as an important demonstration of government responsiveness and social responsibility.
Edeh also applauded Nwifuru's determination to revive and complete abandoned projects inherited from previous administrations, rather than allow substantial public investments to deteriorate.
While commending other ongoing legacy projects including the two state owned universities and Vanco flyover and tunnel, he specifically identified the Oferekpe Regional Water Scheme, Ebonyi International Trade Centre, Ebonyi Pipe Production Company, Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, and among the major legacy projects receiving renewed government attention.
He said the rehabilitation and completion of the projects would help preserve public resources, expand economic opportunities, improve infrastructure and strengthen the state's capacity to attract investments.
The Oferekpe Water Scheme, for instance, represents a major intervention in addressing Ebonyi's longstanding water supply challenges, while the revival of the International Trade Centre is expected to strengthen commercial activities and provide additional economic opportunities.
Similarly, renewed attention to the airport project is expected to improve transportation connectivity and create opportunities for trade, tourism and investment when fully operational.
Edeh said the administration's approach to inherited projects demonstrated an understanding that governance was a continuum and that successive administrations had a responsibility to protect public investments for the benefit of citizens.
He further noted that development should not be measured exclusively by the number of projects initiated but also by the government's commitment to completing viable projects, improving public services and ensuring that the benefits of governance reach communities at the grassroots.
He urged Ebonyi residents to support policies and programmes capable of promoting peace, unity, economic growth and sustainable development, stressing that collective participation remained essential to the state's progress.
The RURA member maintained that Nwifuru's development initiatives had demonstrated a commitment to addressing the needs of the people and repositioning Ebonyi State for greater socioeconomic advancement, adding his re-election in 2027 polls is sacrosanct.
