The Executive Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Hon. Chidiebere Onyemaechi Alo, has suspended all village and community elections across the council area until after the forthcoming 2027 general elections, while introducing fresh restrictions on political rallies and public gatherings over security concerns.
Under the new measures, political parties, organisations and individuals seeking to organise rallies, public events or other gatherings in public facilities must obtain prior approval from the council chairman.
The resolutions were reached at the monthly security stakeholders' meeting held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the Abakaliki Local Government Council Headquarters, Nkaliki, following deliberations on prevailing security challenges and strategies to safeguard lives and property.
A statement on the resolutions said the restrictions cover the use of public facilities, including schools, health centres, village and community halls, village squares, markets, motor parks, streets and other public spaces within the local government area.
It explained that the measure was designed to strengthen security coordination, prevent potential security breaches and maintain public order, particularly as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting also resolved that all village and community elections across the 14 wards of Abakaliki LGA should remain suspended until after the general elections.
Consequently, traditional rulers, town union presidents, village heads, youth leaders and other community stakeholders were directed to ensure strict compliance with the resolutions and discourage activities capable of generating tension, triggering disputes or undermining peaceful coexistence in their respective communities.
The meeting further charged security agencies and other relevant law enforcement authorities to enforce the directives and take appropriate lawful action against individuals or groups found violating the resolutions.
The council urged political leaders, residents, event organisers and other stakeholders to cooperate with the authorities by conducting their activities responsibly and in accordance with the new security arrangements.
It emphasised that the resolutions took immediate effect from Thursday, October 29, 2026, and would remain operational in line with the stipulated restrictions.
Reaffirming his administration's commitment to public safety, Alo called on residents and political stakeholders to demonstrate restraint, responsibility and cooperation, stressing that collective vigilance and adherence to lawful directives were essential to sustaining peace and protecting lives and property across the local government area.
He maintained that the measures were intended to preserve the prevailing security environment and prevent avoidable disruptions to public order as the country approaches another electoral cycle.
