As the world observed the Teachers' Day celebration, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers Ebonyi State chapter, Comrade Egwu Francis Elechi has called on the Federal and State governments alongside those in private sector to intestify efforts in improving the teachers' renumeration to enhance their standard of living.
Egwu made the call while addressing Journalists at the NUT Secretariat to mark the 2021 teachers' day in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Capital.
The NUT Boss said teachers in the State have performed creditably well and urged them to redouble their efforts in service delivery in line with determination to make Ebonyi, the educational State in the country.
He noted that educational sector despite challenges in recent time including COVID-19 pandemic, insurgency as well as kidnapping of students and teachers in some parts of the country have badly affected the school system but observed that teachers would adopt more practical ways of teaching for easy assimilation by the learners.
He advised teachers to live up to their expectation, adding that it will not profit them anything if school system collapses under their care, even as it is line with teachers' professional calling.
However, Elechi commended the State Governor, Engr. David Umahi, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kenneth Ugbala, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Sunday Nwangele among others for their efforts in ensuring the welfare of teachers in the State, especially prompt payment of salaries as well as the ongoing recruitment of teachers and promotional interview for teachers, assured to do all humanly possible towards moving the sector forward.
In their remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education Mrs. Obinaju Alo and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Education Mr. Simon Anyigor advised the teachers to employ high level of professionalism in the discharge of their duties to salvage educational sector.
The permanent secretary Office of the Head of Service Mr. Martins Uguru and his counterpart of Ministry of Education Mr. Sunday Okike, called teachers in the State to have passion in their job and groomed the students properly to improve their overall academic performances.
They also appreciated the State Governor Engr. David Umahi for embarking on the aggressive infrastructural development in various schools in the State, thereby making education for all a reality.
