Ebonyi State Gender-Based Violence Task Force team, Wednesday 13th October 2021 held a sensitization on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and awareness on the Digital Rights of girls in the sty.
The sensitization program took place at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo with over Eighty (80) students from the school (Male and female) actively participating.
The sensitization activity was carried out in collaboration with the office of the Vice President Students Union Government (SUG) AE-FUNAI, Ndufu Alike Ikwo.
Correspondent reports that the program was in commemoration of the 2021 International Day of the Girl Child with the theme “Digital Generation, Our Generation”.
The theme for this year aims to promote digital inclusion and literacy, open new avenues to learning, earning, and leading for girls, bridge the gender divide created by COVID-19 around connectivity, and online safety with girls facing economic and social barriers to the internet and device access.
The task force team led by the Coordinator Bar. Faithvin Nwanchor in her presentation engaged the students on the different forms of GBV and the need to break the culture of silence and speak up against GBV.
The Facilitators during the activity which include the deputy state coordinator Rev. Flora Egwu, USAID-IHP GESI Advisor Emilia Okon, and The Field Officer for YouthHubAfrica Augustine Onwe in their separate submission enlightened the participants on the rights of women and girls with emphasis on digital rights, the need to eliminate Gender Stereotyping, speak up against GBV and the need for Men to protect the rights of women and girls.
Also present during the exercise were partners and team members from CHAD initiative, National Human Rights Commission, Human Rights, and Conflict Resolution Center, and ESERC.
In her closing remark, Bar Faithvin Nwanchor , the State Coordinator of the GBV Taskforce encourages the students to put more effort into creating a safe community for women and girls to thrive.
She urged them to report any incidence of GBV to the task force anytime any day as they will be protected.
The SUG Vice President Miss Precious Ifechukwu Chukwuani thanked the team for the wonderful session. She stated that the participants have learnt a lot and will contribute their efforts to fighting all forms of GBV and victimization in their institution.
She also appealed that the team should look for ways to engage and educate the students more on SGBV/ VAWG/HP.//
