As the race to rescue Ebonyi State through the ballot box gathers momentum, one of the most popular public servants in Ebonyi State politics, Rt. Hon Chukwuma Nwazunku Alugbala (Akwaminieka) has thrown his hat into the ring.
Rt. Hon. Nwazunku’s entrance into the race has changed the race in different dimensions, especially with the widespread agreement that the already established power rotation formula in Ebonyi State must be sustained in the interest of justice, equity, unity and social cohesion of the people of the state.
More so, with the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party at its Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) meeting held at the Lion Building, Enugu State Government House on Sunday, March 27th, 2022 which resolved that all existing zoning arrangements in all the states in the Southeast zone should be maintained ahead of the 2023 general elections, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku, the man from Ebonyi North Senatorial District is now the man to beat.
Akwaminieka as Rt. Hon Nwazunku is popularly known and called Akwamineka across Ebonyi State is a man of many parts, a man with a valid date with destiny.
Hon Nwazunku a man who has emerged as an indefatigable public servant both by training and sheer grace of God is a man at peace with himself and humanity.
Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku Alugbala was born on February 16, 1976 to the family of Chief Nwazunku Alugbala of Nkaleke Echara Unuhu in Ebonyi LGA of Ebonyi State.
He had his early education at St. Patrick Primary School, Kpirikpiri and Abakaliki High School (PRESCO) and later crowned it with a BSc. degree in Political Science from the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.
Akwaminieka started his political career from the grassroots as a community mobiliser and peoples’ advocate.
A well experienced democrat and lawmaker, Nwazunku like the popular saying that ‘charity begins at home’ started his political career in 2003 when he was elected the councillor representing Echi-Aba Ward in today’s Ebonyi LGA from where he emerged as the leader of the Local Government Legislative Council.
He was elected in 2011 into the Ebonyi State House of Assembly to represent Ebonyi North East State Constituency. At the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, he once again emerged the first among equals as his colleagues unanimously elected him the Speaker of the House, a position he held until the life of the 5th Assembly elapsed in May 2015.
As his tenure as the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly elapsed, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku was further elevated to the Federal House of Representatives Abuja where he currently represents the good people of Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency after his re-election in 2019 for a second term.
THE SECRET BEHIND THE NWAZUNKU BRAND
According to the Holy Bible, the book of James says: “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you” (James 4:10).”
Also in Luke 14: 11 the Bible tells us “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku aside from being a humble public servant is also a devoted and committed democrat who believes in and abides by the rule of law and constitutionalism.
During his time as the Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly the democratic credentials of Hon. Nwazunku was tested to all possible limits and he stood firm on the side of the law and constitutionalism. He was unlawfully impeached as a speaker twice and twice he stood his ground on the path of the law and he came out tops, won the matter and retained his office. Those two examples are the classic Nwazunku who may not be ostentatious or noisy but strongly stamps his feet on the ground until his rights and the rights of his people are protected.
In the National Assembly, Hon. Nwazunku has ensured that his constituency and Ebonyi State are never shortchanged as he tenaciously ensures that whatever is due to his constituency or Ebonyi State was attracted. Today, the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency has not felt the imprint of the Akwaminieka.
Yes, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku represents Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, his support base cuts across every local government of Ebonyi State, he is a friend and confidant of all.
