From Victor Nwegede, Abakaliki
In Ebonyi State, the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has charged the exit Corps members to be active participants in wealth creation by utilizing their acquired skills to become employers of labour in society.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Bamai Mercy gave this advice to the Batch 'C' Stream 'I' Corps Members during their passing out ceremony on Thursday in Abakaliki.
Mrs Bamai called on the outgoing corps members to be using their acquired skills from the scheme to make a better livelihood, advising them not to wait for white-collar jobs before seeking means for survival and wealth creation to advance the human society.
According to her, "all that you've learned in the NYSC should not end with your certificate, the skills you've acquired should be put into use to enable you to make money and become an employer of labour."
She continued, "teach people the skills you've acquired, there are some of you who have participated in SAED that would not be looking for employment."
The State Coordinator noted that the outgoing Corps members had been inculcated with the spirits of discipline, hardworking and dedication to duty, and urged them to sustain the tempo while pursuing a greater future.
She also advised them to shun fraudulent activities and any other thing that is capable of jeopardising their future.
She observed: "When you came, we were given the responsibility to inculcate discipline in you, as long as you are alive, you need to be disciplined.
"I encourage you to be hardworking and urge you to abstain from fraudulent activities, as you go out, let other people know that there's dignity in labour."
While commending the diverse contributions made by the Corps members to their host communities, especially their active stake in health initiatives for rural dwellers and personal community development projects, she announced that 734 of them (331 males and 403 females) were passing out from the state.
She added that 13 corps members comprising 5 males and 7 females would do extension service, while one of them repeated service as the punishment for their respective offences ranging from abscondment, among others.
The outgoing Corps members, Odiegwu Desmond, Gloria Amarachi, and many others commended the NYSC officials in Ebonyi saying their service in the state has impacted them positively, especially in the areas of skills acquisition, discipline and building good relationships with different people irrespective of their tribes, religions and backgrounds.
