Ebonyi State House of Assembly has summoned the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to appear before its House Committee on Power, to explain the exorbitant billing of their customers in the State.
The Chief Secretary to the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Leo Ekene Oketa made this known in a press release.
According to Oketa, the issue was raised on the floor of the House, during the special plenary, yesterday, Monday, November 7, 2022, by the Deputy Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly - Rt. Hon. Kingsley Ogbonna Ikoro, under Matter of Urgent Public importance.
The Deputy Speaker decried the over-billing, as grossly inadequate and not by any stretch, commensurate with the energy supplied by the company. In his submissions, he decried the activities of the EEDC in the Afikpo North Local Government Area, where there has not been light for years, yet the people are billed crazily. Hon. Ikoro, therefore, implored the House to summon the company, to appear before the House for an explanation.
Supporting the motion, the Member representing Afikpo South West Constituency, Hon. Nkemka Okoro Onuma said that “Ebonyians are being taken for granted, whereas people without light are being charged heavy bills.”
In his reaction, the Honourable Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru said that the company should appear before the House Committee on Power and offer clear explanations on the matter. He directed the Committee to ensure they organize a public hearing on the issue so that Ebonyians will have their input on the matter.
The special plenary equally saw the presentation of the 2023 Appropriation Bill, by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr David Nweze Umahi.
