The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has intensified its sectoral advocacy to reduce road traffic crashes in Ebonyi to the barest.
The Sector Commander of the Corps in Ebonyi, C C Uche Chukwurah made the disclosure in Abakaliki during its
thanksgiving in a church service to mark the 2022 Road Traffic Crash Remembrance Day in the state.
Chukwurah said that the thanksgiving was part of its advocacy on the citizens to collaborate with the corps in checking incessant loss of lives and injuries sustained through road crashes.
"We have intensified this campaign in the motor parks, churches, mosques, schools and even governmental establishments.
"We enjoin the citizens to shun overspeeding, wrongful overtaking among others which had led to avoidable loss of lives and injuries.
"We have also taken the campaign to the governmental sector due to the overspending tendencies recorded among government officials.
"We enlighten government officials to drive carefully because they too have life which has no duplicate.
The sector commander said that emphasis is placed more on commercial vehicle drivers due to the number of persons they convey in the course of their activities.
"Commercial drivers convey several people at a stretch which means several lives and destinies in their care.
"We have noticed that overspending and wrongful overtaking is prevalent in Ebonyi and we advise the people to kill the speed before it kills them.
She said that the activities marking the event in the state included intensive public enlightenment, visit to road traffic victims in the hospitals among others.
"We also took the advocacy to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to promote youth involvement in road safety issues.
Chukwurah said that the United Nations commemorated the yearly event to draw awareness to the challenges posed by road traffic crashes in the society.
Chief Richard Idike, the Coordinator of the FRSC Special Marshals in Ebonyi said it would always complement the efforts of regular marshals to ensure safe roads in the state.
"We educate motorists that there was nothing special in the ember months for instance but road crashes are prevalent due to the carelessness of most drivers.
Rev. Augustine Mouka, Administrator of All Saints Cathedral Abakaliki where the thanksgiving was held, prayed for divine strengthening of the corps to discharge its mandate of saving lives on the roads.
