A 39-year-old man, Earnest Chukwumaobi has been sentenced to 30 days imprisonment on Tuesday, by a Mobile court of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Abakaliki, Ebonyi for violating traffic offences.
Chukwumaobi whose address was not disclosed, is facing charges of route violation (driving in one-way) and assault on FRSC personnel.
He however pleaded guilty and explained that he was rushing to meet up with an emergency.
The defendant pleaded for mercy, adding that he has no lawyer.
The Prosecutor, Mrs Joyce Okoche told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 14, along the Abakaliki-Enugu expressway, the axis of the Alex-Ekwueme Federal Teaching, Abakaliki (FETHA 2).
She explained that the defendant unlawfully drove against traffic by one-way driving, thereby committing an offence punishable under the road safety Act of 2007.
”The defendant assaults the FRSC officers on duty. After he was arrested, he moved further and invited the men of the military, who came and took our personnel to their barracks.
“Our personnel were finally released by the military with the intervention of our Sector Commander, Uche Chukwurah,“ she said.
The Chief Magistrate, Anthony Nwusulor in his judgment, said the court was instituted to ensure justice to all citizens and sentenced the defendant to 30 days imprisonment.
