The Immaculate Mind Care Foundation has donated undisclosed cash to the psychiatric patients in the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki as part of assisting them to offset their hospital bills while taking medications.
The foundation led by the founder, Miss Chimamaka Immaculate Ali also donated foodstuff, detergents, toiletries and other items to motherless babies, physically challenged, destitute and old people in the state.
Miss Ali while interacting with journalists after the donations, expressed her readiness to partner with the Ebonyi State government to promote mental health awareness in the state.
According to her, the partnership would consolidate the government’s effort to prioritize mental health awareness and fight against the intake of hard drugs.
Miss Ali explained that her team joined her in visiting the Psychiatric ward of the Alex Ekweme Federal University Teaching Hospital, the homes of motherless babies, old people, physically challenged and destitute in the state to ascertain the level of their challenges before offering solutions to them.
Her words: “The first place we visited which is the psychiatric ward at the teaching hospital was to see the problems and to hear from the doctors there on the challenges they are facing, and how we can help as a new foundation.
“We were able to go round there to see the facilities which I was not impressed with, I think there’s been so much lackadaisical attitude towards mental health in Nigeria.
“They’ve been almost like a neglect to that department because there are stereotypes that affect people living with mental health."
Emphasizing the need to promote awareness creation on mental health, she promised to contribute her quota by speaking up to key government officials and other relevant authorities.
“Because a lot of our young people have fallen into depression and other mental health issues because of the use of drugs.
“Because I love humans this is the only way I can contribute to my world by speaking out, using my voice and position to speak about mental health awareness," she said.
Recall that Miss Ali represented Ebonyi State during the Miss Universe Nigeria beauty pageant organized by the Silverbird group recently.
Miss Ali, an Ebonyi-born activist and business designer said that her foundation made donations to the mental patients and less privileged people in Ebonyi to appreciate the state for supporting her during the beauty pageant.
“I contested for Miss Universe to represent Ebonyi State as an indigene of the State, I came to say thank you for the support the Ebonyi State gave me," Ali said.
