try for equity and fairness, noting that it would guarantee peace in the region and the revival of the Nigerian Police force in the country.
He made the call during the Retreat of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review held in Kano state on Friday, September 27, 2024.
The federal lawmaker advocated for the creation of an additional state in the southeast geopolitical zone to be at par with the other geopolitical zones in the country. He also insisted that the Nigerian Police is capable of policing the entire country if adequately equipped with enough manpower.
Senator Nwebonyi, who represents Ebonyi State in the Constitutional Review Conference, however, disagreed on the issue of creating a State Police.
He argued that the existing Federal Police needs to be strengthened instead of creating State Police adding that there should be collaborative efforts from the federal, state and local governments to revive the Nigerian Police.
Earlier, the Deputy President of the Senate, who doubles as the Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee- Senator Barau Jibrin, charged the members to take the deliberations with utmost care and consideration, adding that their decisions will have far-reaching effects on the generations yet unborn.
The Committee is saddled with the responsibility of making amendments and reviewing the constitution to bring up an acceptable constitution for the country. There were representatives of State Assembly Speakers, past Federal Legislators, consultants and other relevant Stakeholders at the retreat.
