Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi State University, EBSU, Prof Chigozie Ogbu, has decried the rising cases of vandalization, stealing, and other criminal activities in the institution.
Ogbu disclosed this yesterday while refuting the allegation leveled against him and other management of EBSU on social media platforms, accusing them of auctioning the university property, which was still in good use.
According to him, all almond cables used in the electricity connections in the different departments and units in the university had been stolen and the situation has thrown the institution into darkness.
He said the cable thefts were not high last year, noting that the institution management has reported its security challenges to its governing council.
"There's no single building having almond cables as a result of high thefts in this university. They start stealing in the library before entering the Mass Communication Department of this institution," he revealed.
The VC recalled that recently a report came to his office that someone was selling laptops labeled EBSU, but the security operatives later arrested the suspects.
He said the university is currently experiencing a blackout, affecting its academic activities as students taking examinations at the Information Communication Technology ICT center write their exams without fans.
Ogbu explained that the school could not engage the services of armed security personnel as, in his words, the federal government policy does not allow them to operate within the academic environments.
He disclosed that the university despite engaging the services of a security outfit, the hoodlums had invaded the school premises, shot sporadically before carrying out their criminal act, and left uncoated.
On the alleged sale of a Tata Tipper belonging to the university, Ogbu described the allegation as falsehood and stated that the Tipper was reported missing by the driver handling it.
He maintained that the matter had been reported to the police, who arrested the suspects connected with the disappearance of the tipper after being recovered in a forest in Ikwo Local Council Area of Ebonyi State.
Ogbu, however, urged the general public to disregard the allegation, saying the peddlers of the alleged fake news on the social media platforms were in their calculated effort to tarnish the good image of the university and its management.
