Hon Victor Nwoke, Lawmaker representing Abakaliki North Constituency in Ebonyi State House and Chairman, House Committee on Youth Development and Sports.
The political and sporting landscape of Ebonyi State was set alight over the weekend as Dr Victor Nwoke, member representing Abakaliki North Constituency in Ebonyi State House of Assembly and Chairman, House Committee on Youth Development and Sports, was commended by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and other stakeholders for organizing a multi-million naira football tournament that has captured the spirit and energy of the youth across his constituency.
The tournament, which featured top grassroots teams and climaxed at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, has been widely celebrated as one of the largest privately sponsored football events in Ebonyi’s recent history. With a grand prize of four million naira and other cash incentives, totalling in the tens of millions, the competition marked a bold new chapter in sports-driven empowerment and youth engagement in the state.
Barrister Chinedu Augustin Uburu, Executive Chairman of Ebonyi Local Government and ALGON Chairman in the state, described the initiative as a “milestone in leadership and community development,” hailing Nwoke as “the right choice on the throne.”
“To see a lawmaker invest this massively in youth development speaks volumes. This is more than entertainment — it’s empowerment, it’s unity, and it’s vision. Hon. Nwoke has set a benchmark that others should emulate," Uburu said.
In his remarks, Nwoke explained that the tournament was inspired by Governor Francis Nwifuru’s “People’s Charter of Needs” and designed as a strategic tool to combat youth restiveness, promote unity, and unlock hidden talents in sports.
“Football is a global language, and through it, we are creating opportunities and building dreams. This is my commitment to the people who gave me their mandate," he said.
The final match saw Building Material FC overpowered AE-FETHA FC with a decisive 3–0 win, triggering jubilation among fans and further showcasing the talent pool within the constituency.
Pius Nwankwo, Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Development and Sports and Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, also praised the initiative, noting that “this kind of investment into sports infrastructure and grassroots talent is exactly what Ebonyi State needs to address key societal challenges like unemployment and insecurity.”
The tournament has not only spotlighted Nwoke’s passion for youth empowerment but also reignited conversations around the role of sports in community development, peacebuilding, and social advancement.
With overwhelming support and massive participation, the competition has firmly positioned Ebonyi North State Constituency as a hub of sporting excellence and progressive leadership — and Hon. Victor Nwoke as a trailblazer in public service with impact.
