Ebonyi All Progressives Congress Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, has urged players of Abakaliki Football Club, known as De Rice Boys, to prioritize professionalism and see football as a pathway to a successful career rather than mere entertainment.
Emegha made these remarks at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium Abakaliki during a match that saw Abakaliki FC fall 2-0 to Osun United FC. Welcomed by an enthusiastic Abakaliki Supporters Club, Emegha emphasized that football transcends borders and has the power to unify even the most divided communities.
“Football is a global game that brings together people from all walks of life,” he said. “However, beyond the excitement, it’s a business—a platform for you to secure your future and make your mark.”
Acknowledging the unwavering support of Ebonyi State Governor, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, Emegha praised the state’s commitment to using sports as a tool for youth empowerment. “This match itself is a testament to how sports can steer young people away from crime and other social vices,” he said.
In his address, Emegha stressed the importance of discipline and hard work, sharing insights from his own playing experience up to the Cameroonian league. “European clubs are always on the lookout for talented players who take the game seriously. The state has equipped you with boots and other resources, so focus on your craft and listen to your coach,” he urged.
Emegha also commented on the players’ personal presentation, noting that while style is important, the focus should remain on performance. “I saw some of you with dyed hair and fancy hairstyles. There will be time for that when you’ve established yourselves. Right now, Ebonyi wants to see you become the next Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, or Mikel Obi,” he said.
Looking ahead, Emegha expressed optimism about the team’s chances in the final of the President Federation Cup, commending the governor for his continued investment in the team.
Earlier, Prince Maurice Mbam, Chairman of the Abakaliki FC Supporters Club, highlighted the players’ determination despite a challenging league season. “Football is about giving your all, and our players have shown incredible resilience in the FA Cup and the NNL. We also unveiled our supporters’ jersey today, demonstrating the unwavering support you have behind you,” Mbam concluded.
