The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima and the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, were received at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport (SMICA), Owerri, Imo State, for the Federal Government’s official flag-off ceremony of the 2025 Hajj operations.
The event marked a historic milestone as it featured the first-ever international passenger flight to depart from SMICA, signifying a major step forward in the airport's development. Recent upgrades have brought the airport up to international aviation standards, paving the way for future commercial international flights.
Governor Hope Uzodimma, in his remarks, emphasized that the selection of Imo State as the departure point for the national Hajj exercise reflects the state's ongoing efforts to promote unity and inclusiveness. He highlighted Imo’s consistent support for both Christian and Muslim pilgrimages as part of the administration’s broader commitment to peaceful coexistence and spiritual development.
Governor Uzodimma also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the federal support that made the achievement possible. He urged the departing pilgrims to pray for Nigeria’s leaders and to conduct themselves as worthy representatives of the nation.
The ceremony was attended by government officials, religious leaders, and members of the Muslim community.
