In a decisive move to strengthen residential security, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has approved the construction of a perimeter fence and the installation of a modern gating system at the Ibara Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Abeokuta, the state capital.
This initiative is part of the Ibara GRA Regeneration Scheme aimed at modernizing and securing one of the state’s foremost residential areas. The development was announced on Monday by the Commissioner for Housing, Jamiu Akande Omoniyi, who described the project as a critical response to growing security concerns voiced by residents and stakeholders within the estate.
According to Omoniyi, residents—particularly subscribers to the regeneration scheme—had consistently expressed concerns over the porosity of the estate, which they said made it vulnerable to security breaches. The governor’s approval, he noted, reflects the administration’s responsiveness to citizens’ needs and its commitment to urban renewal and safety.
"The newly approved ring-fenced perimeter and gated entry points will align Ibara GRA with the security standards of modern private estates across Nigeria," the commissioner said. "Beyond enhancing safety, the project will also significantly improve the visual appeal and value of the estate."
Omoniyi commended Governor Abiodun for what he called a "forward-thinking" approach to estate management and reiterated the Ministry of Housing’s commitment to implementing the state’s housing development agenda in full.
He also revealed that stakeholder engagements would be conducted to ensure that areas not initially covered under the regeneration scheme would be considered for inclusion in the upgraded security framework.
The Ibara GRA, one of the oldest government residential zones in the state, is now set to benefit from a transformation that blends improved security, aesthetic modernization, and integrated urban planning — a model the government says will be extended to other GRAs across Ogun State.
