Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the recognition of Samuel Anyanwu as the authentic National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a Supreme Court ruling in his favor.
Wike made the declaration during an emergency meeting with PDP stakeholders from all 36 states and the FCT at his Abuja residence. The meeting was convened amid growing internal pressure within the party calling for Anyanwu’s resignation following his failed bid for the Imo State governorship in 2023.
Addressing the gathering, Wike dismissed the calls for Anyanwu’s ouster, insisting that the matter had been settled by the country’s apex court. "The Supreme Court has spoken. Samuel Anyanwu remains the legally recognized National Secretary of the PDP. Anyone who wishes to challenge that decision must wait until the party’s convention later this year," Wike said.
The FCT Minister further defended Anyanwu’s decision not to vacate his post while contesting the Imo governorship election. He pointed to the precedent set by Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, who retained his position as State PDP Chairman throughout his campaign and only resigned after emerging victorious.
Wike warned that any attempt to sidestep the party’s constitution would amount to dishonoring the foundational principles of the PDP. "We cannot allow internal sabotage under the guise of reform. We must protect the integrity of our constitution and the legacy of those who built this party," he stated.
The meeting ended with a resolution among stakeholders to uphold the Supreme Court judgment and allow due process to take its course at the forthcoming party convention.
