The Ebonyi State Government has issued a stern warning to motorists against driving through the Vanco flyover construction site, following a truck accident on Wednesday that caused significant damage to goods and property.
The incident occurred when a heavy-duty truck, loaded with cartons of beer, lost control and plunged into a pit at the ongoing Vanco Junction flyover site in Abakaliki.
The vehicle, bearing registration number Enugu FST978ST, was transporting small stout beer when the accident happened. The driver, Mr. Benjamin Joseph, narrowly escaped with his life.
Speaking at the accident site, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Lebechi Mbam, expressed concern over motorists’ continued disregard for the government's ban on vehicular movement through the active construction zone.
“It is unfortunate that despite repeated warnings and the availability of alternative routes, some drivers still choose to endanger their lives and the lives of others by ignoring safety directives. This incident could have resulted in fatalities. We thank God the driver survived," he said.
The commissioner attributed the incident to negligence, emphasizing that the site was clearly barricaded and marked to prevent such occurrences.
He urged the public to support Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration by complying with safety regulations, especially around ongoing infrastructure projects.
“I have directed workers on-site to assist in salvaging the goods and recovering the vehicle. The government remains committed to completing the project safely and on schedule,” he added.
The owner of the goods, Mr. Ugochukwu Lazarus, Director of Unique Laz and Sera for Life, commended the state government for its swift response and support at the scene.
The driver, Mr. Benjamin Joseph, who said it was his first visit to Abakaliki, lamented the severe damage to his truck and cargo. He appealed to the public and relevant authorities for support in recovering from the loss.
The state government reiterated its call for strict compliance with safety regulations around construction zones to prevent future accidents.
