Ebonyi State on Saturday joined the global community in celebrating the annual Olympics Day Run, with the event taking place at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium in Abakaliki.
The spirited event, which began and ended at the stadium, drew athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and residents from across the state in a collective celebration of Olympic values—excellence, friendship, and respect.
Led by Dr. Emmanuel Utobo, Director of Sports at the Ebonyi State Sports Council, the run emphasized the importance of physical activity, health, and unity through sports. Participants, including students, civil servants, and local sports clubs, took part in the non-competitive race to demonstrate their commitment to fitness and community engagement.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Utobo applauded the turnout and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sports development and youth empowerment. He noted that Ebonyi’s active involvement in the global celebration reflects a broader agenda to build a culture of sports excellence and promote healthy lifestyles among its citizens.
“This event is not just a run, but a reminder that sports can unite communities and inspire individuals to achieve greatness,” he said.
The Olympics Day Run is an initiative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) celebrated annually on June 23 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games in 1894. Ebonyi’s participation this year reinforces its growing footprint in national and grassroots sports development.
