Ebonyi State Commissioner for Environment, Chief Victor Chukwu, has condemned the misuse of newly constructed canopy bus stops in Abakaliki, warning against their use as public toilets. He stressed that the bus stops are intended as shelters for commuters, especially during adverse weather, and not for unsanitary behavior.
Chukwu acknowledged residents’ biological needs but insisted that public defecation and urination are unacceptable. He urged people to use private or existing facilities until public toilets are constructed. Plans are underway to install such amenities at strategic points in the capital.
He warned that violators of environmental laws will face strict penalties and emphasized the government's zero-tolerance stance on infrastructure abuse.
On broader sanitation efforts, the commissioner praised the state's waste management progress, highlighting daily waste collection by 24 contractors across 24 zones and the effective operation of a state recycling plant. The plant, which converts waste into reusable materials like nylon and plastics, is also exploring bioenergy options.
Chukwu reaffirmed the state government's commitment to urban sanitation and called on citizens to support efforts to keep the city clean.
