In a bold stride toward industrialization and economic transformation, the Ebonyi State Government under the leadership of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has commenced a groundbreaking initiative with the flag-off of an Industrial City in Ezzamgbo. This historic move signals a renewed commitment to repositioning Ebonyi as a hub of economic activity, reversing decades of underutilization of the state's vast mineral and human resources.
At the heart of this industrial awakening is a robust policy shift that places reclamation of abandoned mining pits as a mandatory criterion for mining operations in the state. This crucial step not only safeguards the environment but ensures that mining no longer occurs at the expense of public safety and community health.
Prince John Ekpe-Nwangbo, the Special Assistant to the Ebonyi State Governor on Mineral Development, lauded the vision and political will demonstrated by Governor Nwifuru. He described the industrial city project as a “realistic signal” and a catalyst for long-awaited industrial development that will unlock the state’s economic potential and create employment opportunities for its citizens.
"With the Industrial City in Ezzamgbo, Ebonyi will soon become a destination for both foreign and local investors in manufacturing and production. This will not only boost our internally generated revenue but also reduce economic migration by providing jobs and opportunities right here at home," Nwangbo said.
He further emphasized that one of the major challenges—access to the national power grid—is being addressed, as the state government takes decisive steps to ensure reliable energy for industrial operations.
Prince Nwangbo, a seasoned Geologist, noted that Ebonyi’s journey into industrial prominence isn’t new. “Ebonyi was at the forefront of industrialization even before Nigeria's independence, as seen in the establishment of NIGERCEM in Nkalagu.
“Today, the state is more attractive than ever, thanks to investor-friendly policies, improved security, and a welcoming populace," he stated.
He called on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) to prioritize the revival of defunct industries, especially NIGERCEM, echoing the industrial vision of late Dr. Michael Okpara, whose legacy continues to inspire regional development.
In response to concerns about the exploitation of mineral resources by external mining firms who offer little benefit to host communities, Nwangbo assured that the government has redefined investor agreements to prioritize local beneficiation, community development, and environmental protection.
“Reclaiming mining pits is no longer optional; it is now a legal obligation.The government has begun an aggressive reclamation campaign to transform hazardous pits into safe and usable land, as part of our commitment to a clean and healthy environment," he added.
As Ebonyi State moves into a new era of purposeful industrialization, one thing is clear: the government is not just building factories—it is reclaiming the future.
Through visionary policies and strategic actions, Ebonyi is proving that sustainable development and economic growth can go hand-in-hand.
