Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has stated that the development of Abia did not begin in 2023, urging the current administration to recognize and give credit to the contributions of previous governments.
Speaking on Thursday at a gathering of his former appointees in his hometown, Umuobiakwa in Obingwa LGA, Ikpeazu emphasized the importance of continuity in governance and the need to acknowledge the foundation laid by past administrations.
“Abia State didn’t start in 2023. A typical example is the International Conference Centre in Umuahia. It was conceptualized, designed, and built by my predecessor. We only completed it and named it the Ochendo International Conference Centre. That’s what leadership is about,” Ikpeazu said.
He criticized what he described as attempts by some in the current administration to downplay previous efforts, calling such moves propaganda. He highlighted projects like the Ariaria International Market remodeling and the Port Harcourt Road reconstruction, stressing the foundational roles played by his team, including former commissioners John Okiyi-Kalu and Bob Ogu.
According to him, “The Port Harcourt Road project was designed under my administration. We resolved litigation issues, secured World Bank support, and began work. It’s only fair to acknowledge those efforts, even as the current government continues the project.”
Ikpeazu also recounted some achievements under his administration, including building over 250 roads, creating 5,000 jobs, constructing 650 classroom blocks, initiating two industries, and offering overseas scholarships.
He urged his former aides to remain proud of their contributions and maintain solidarity. “We may not have done everything, but we certainly did something,” he said.
Earlier, former commissioners and aides, including John Okiyi-Kalu, Enyinnaya Apollos, and Obinna Oriaku, praised Ikpeazu for his leadership style and the opportunity to serve. They also called for unity and strategic political alignment to strengthen their influence in the state.
The gathering also saw goodwill messages from other former aides and PDP leaders who reaffirmed their loyalty and gratitude to the former governor.
