Police have launched a nationwide manhunt for Samuel Njoroge, who is accused of brutally murdering his estranged partner and mother of his three children, Naomi Chebet, reportedly over missed phone calls.
The shocking incident occurred on the night of Saturday, June 22, at Chebet’s rented apartment in Nairobi. Her lifeless body was discovered early Sunday morning by her brother, Harrison, who found her concealed under a blanket on the couch.
According to Harrison, a neighbor had seen Naomi and Samuel entering the apartment around 9:00 p.m. that night. About 90 minutes later, the same neighbor noticed Samuel leaving alone — wearing a face mask, which struck them as suspicious due to the odd timing and setting.
Harrison, who works night shifts, returned home between midnight and 1:00 a.m. Seeing his sister seemingly asleep, he chose not to disturb her. However, hours later, her unresponsiveness prompted him to check on her — only to discover she had been dead for several hours, showing signs of a violent assault.
The case took a chilling twist when Samuel allegedly posted incriminating messages on social media, hinting at a confession. One post in Swahili read: “Mm nilimuuwa coz ya upuzi, mbona anijibu?” — roughly translated as, “I killed her because of nonsense, why isn't she answering me?” Another read: “Wewe kufa uniodokee malaya wewe,” meaning, “Die and leave me alone, you prostitute.”
The couple had a tumultuous history, marked by periods of separation and reconciliation, the most recent reunion having occurred in March. Friends and relatives believed they had stabilized their relationship — until the horrific events unfolded over the weekend.
Police have identified Njoroge as the prime suspect and are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward. Authorities have vowed to pursue all leads to ensure he is apprehended and brought to justice.
The murder has sparked outrage nationwide, with women's rights groups and activists condemning the killing as yet another tragic case of gender-based violence. Social media has been flooded with messages demanding justice for Naomi and stronger protections for women in abusive relationships.
Naomi Chebet is survived by her three children, who now face an uncertain future as investigations continue.
Authorities have reassured the public that every effort is being made to capture the suspect and deliver justice for Naomi and her grieving family.
