The Executive Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Chief Stephen Ebere Nwogba, has commended Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for his prudent management of state resources, noting that despite the prevailing economic hardship, the governor has embarked on massive infrastructural development without borrowing a dime.
Nwogba made this known yesterday during a media interaction with journalists in Abakaliki where he described Governor Nwifuru as a "frugal and visionary leader" who has remained committed to people-oriented governance since assuming office.
“In this economy, where ₦100,000 can barely purchase anything in the market, Governor Nwifuru has managed the state’s resources with wisdom. He has not borrowed from any bank—local or international yet the volume of work going on across the state is overwhelming,” Nwogba stated.
He cited the construction of over 1,000 kilometers of roads, ongoing projects like the Vanco Flyover, remodeling of Abakaliki capital city, and the clearing of pension and gratuity arrears as key achievements of the administration. “His commitment to infrastructure and welfare without accumulating debt is a testament to his financial discipline,” he added.
Nwogba further praised the governor's approach to governance, noting that rather than engaging in elaborate ceremonies for minor projects, Nwifuru focuses on delivering impactful, long-lasting infrastructure. “While others spend more on commissioning than on the actual projects, our governor delivers silently but effectively,” he said.
Reflecting on the progress of Ebonyi State, Nwogba acknowledged the contributions of past leaders including Dr. Sam Egwu for prioritizing education, Chief Martin Elechi for rural development and unity bridges, and Engr. Dave Umahi for turning the state into a construction hub. He said Nwifuru’s leadership has continued in that tradition, with a strong focus on human capital development and inclusive governance.
As part of his local government achievements, Nwogba highlighted several impactful initiatives, including organizing workshops for skills acquisition and empowerment, scholarship awards, bursary disbursements, support for farm inputs, assistance with medical bills, rural road construction, school building projects, installation of motorized boreholes and solar-powered streetlights, regular salary payments, distribution of cars and motorcycles, as well as the provision of grants and incentives to many council residents. He also emphasized proactive conflict resolution efforts across communities within the council area.
Asked whether he was satisfied with his performance as chairman, Nwogba responded confidently. “I have served my people well. I know where we were and where we are today. There is always room for improvement, but I believe the next chairman will do even better,” he said.
He also commended the governor’s youth-inclusive policies, saying the engagement of young people in state and local government structures has helped in reducing crime and boosting productivity.
“The moment you empower youths, you’re creating jobs, reducing insecurity, and stimulating economic growth. When people are busy with meaningful jobs or businesses, they don’t resort to crime,” he remarked.
Chief Nwogba concluded with a call for continued support and prayers for Governor Nwifuru, urging residents to rally behind the administration to sustain peace and development in Ebonyi State.
