The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran sports administrator, Alhaji Abba Abdullahi Yola.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Association's Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin described Yola as a gentleman who made significant contributions to Nigerian sports and public service.
Yola held several key positions during his lifetime, including serving as Assistant Director and Chief of Staff to former Youth and Sports Minister Sunday Dare. He also previously chaired the Kano Pillars Football Club.
“Alhaji Abba Yola is a fine gentleman and one who is dedicated in anything he was part of. I have always known him as a man destined for greatness and he truly achieved,” said Benjamin in his tribute.
“He inspired and exuded uncommon qualities of humility and kindness,” he added.
SWAN extended its condolences to Yola’s family, the people of Kano State, and the wider Nigerian sports community. The late sports icon is expected to be buried immediately in accordance with Islamic rites.
