The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Richard Ugo-Idike, has confirmed the return of Abakaliki FC to the Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria’s second-tier football division.
Speaking to newsmen in Abakaliki, Hon. Idike revealed that the state government successfully acquired a league slot from Hammola FC, a club previously based in Osun State, following Abakaliki FC’s relegation last season.
Nicknamed “De Rice Boys,” Abakaliki FC’s re-entry into the NNL is seen as a significant stride by the current administration toward boosting youth engagement and reviving sports in the state.
“This is a fulfillment of the promise made by His Excellency, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, during the reception organized for the team after their impressive run to the President Federation Cup final,” the commissioner stated.
Idike praised the governor for his unwavering support for sports, describing the move as a bold step to reposition Ebonyi on the national football map while creating platforms for young talents to thrive.
While the confirmation of the club’s return has sparked excitement among fans and stakeholders, details about the team’s preseason preparations and a potential name change remain unclear as of press time.
