The Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in Ebonyi State, Hon. Richard Ugo Idike, has received the state’s junior wrestling team in his office at Centenary City, Abakaliki, following their outstanding performance at the maiden South-East Under-15 and Under-17 Wrestling Championship held in Enugu.
The team, led by Chief Coach Peter Ugwu and Assistant Coach Ewa Azubuike, clinched a total of five medals—1 gold, 3 silvers, and 1 bronze showcasing Ebonyi’s growing potential in grassroots sports.
Ugwu Sarah secured gold, while Igwe Samuel, Ogah Chigozie, and Ugwu Happiness took silver medals. Nwambeke Ndubuisi earned a bronze.
Receiving the team, Commissioner Idike praised the young athletes for making the state proud and assured them of continued support.
He emphasized the government's resolve to develop youth talents, while also commending Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his youth-focused policies.
Dr. Emmanuel Utobo, Director of the Ebonyi State Sports Council, acknowledged the governor's impact on sports development, and Coach Ugwu appealed for improved equipment and training facilities. Commissioner Idike pledged to communicate the team’s needs to the governor and ensure their efforts are rewarded.
