Ebonyi North emerged champions of the 2025 UBEB Sports Fiesta after edging Ebonyi Central in a tense penalty shootout at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
The highly anticipated final, organized by the Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), was the climax of a week-long celebration of school sports and talent development across the state.
The game ended goalless after regulation time, with both teams showing tactical discipline and flashes of brilliance. But when it came down to penalties, Ebonyi North held their nerve, converting four spot kicks to Central’s two.
The Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Obila, representing Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, officially kicked off the final. She commended the players for their courage and praised UBEB for organizing a platform that promotes unity and talent discovery.
“This event shows the incredible potential of our children. We’re committed to supporting youth sports at every level,” she said.
Also present was the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Prince Richard Ugo Idike, who described the tournament as a game-changer for grassroots sports in Ebonyi. He emphasized the importance of early exposure and structured competitions for grooming future champions.
The final drew hundreds of spectators and supporters, turning the stadium into a carnival of chants, music, and youthful excitement. As Ebonyi North lifted the trophy, fans erupted in celebration, marking the end of a successful and memorable fiesta.
The 2025 UBEB Sports Fiesta has been hailed as a major step forward in reviving competitive school sports and nurturing Ebonyi’s next generation of athletes.
