The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called on the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and other stakeholders in the sports sector to prioritize the welfare and recognition of sports journalists, describing them as key contributors to the growth and development of sports in Nigeria.
In a statement issued Tuesday by SWAN Secretary-General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, on behalf of the national president, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, the association expressed deep concern over the continued neglect and marginalization of sports journalists by administrators and institutions despite their critical role.
"Sports journalists in Nigeria go above and beyond to promote athletes, events, and the entire industry — often funding their own travel, accommodation, and logistics to cover competitions locally and abroad," Benjamin said.
Citing the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, SWAN revealed that over 25 Nigerian journalists attended the event without institutional support, providing both comprehensive coverage and moral support to the Super Falcons.
“This level of commitment deserves institutional recognition. Journalists are not just covering stories — they are part of the sporting journey,” he added.
The SWAN president criticized a prevailing attitude within the NSC and other agencies where the media is treated as an afterthought in the planning and execution of sports activities.
“In many instances, the media is excluded from key programs and events, yet administrators rely heavily on the same media during personal or political crises,” Benjamin stated.
He commended Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, for rewarding athletes and coaches, but urged that similar appreciation be extended to journalists who amplify these achievements to national and global audiences.
SWAN therefore called for a new policy direction that ensures the inclusion, protection, and reward of sports journalists in all areas of Nigeria’s sports ecosystem from planning to execution and celebration.
