The Ebonyi State Government is to construct sixty-five (65) three-bedroom bungalows for widows across the state and award new scholarships to 140 students for admission into the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Oferekpe Agbaja Izzi.
The Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr. Chief Ikeuwa Omebeh, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at the Government House, Abakaliki.
Omebeh said the housing initiative followed the successful completion of the first phase of the Widows Housing Scheme championed by the wife of the Governor.
He noted that the new phase would see the construction of 65 housing units, five in each of the 13 local government areas to be distributed to widows under the Community Charter of Needs framework.
According to him, the move aligns with the Governor’s compassionate vision of improving the living conditions of vulnerable groups and ensuring equitable development across all parts of the state.
“This project is aimed at providing decent shelter for our widows and restoring dignity to the less privileged members of our society,” Omebeh stated.
On education, the Commissioner announced that the Government would award new scholarships to 140 students for admission into the Ebonyi State University of ICT at Oferekpe Agbaja, Izzi Local Government Area.
He explained that the decision was taken after a review of reports on compliance from the benefiting local government areas and the host community, adding that the Ministry of Tertiary Education had been directed to ensure that all targeted council areas are adequately represented within the specified timeframe.
“The scholarship programme demonstrates the Government’s strong commitment to human capital development, especially in technology and innovation, to prepare our youths for the opportunities of a digital economy,” Omebeh added.
The Commissioner also briefed on other decisions reached by the Council, including the constitution of a seven-man committee to ensure the completion of the Izzo/Amaeze Housing Project within two weeks and a directive for further engagement with the contractor handling the 1.5MW Independent Power Plant for clarification on project status.
He said the Government also reviewed progress on the Ultramodern Akanu Ibiam International Conference Centre, approved the test running of the newly installed Wireless Internet Service in selected areas, and received the architectural design for the remodelling of the State Library Complex.
Omebeh reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to continue implementing policies and programmes that promote social welfare, educational advancement, and inclusive growth in line with the People’s Charter of Needs.
“The plan to build 65 housing units for widows and award 140 new scholarships is another demonstration of this Government’s commitment to building a compassionate, empowered, and knowledge-driven Ebonyi State,” he said.
