The FCT Police Command has refuted reports of an assassination attempt on a navy officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, who earlier had a confrontation with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, over the ownership of a plot of land in the Gaduwa District of the FCT.
Some media reports had purported that the young Nigerian navy officer had escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday evening after being trailed by unidentified men dressed in black, who rode two unmarked Hilux vans without registration numbers.
The reports say the gallant officer was followed around 6:30pm “from the NIPCO Filling Station, off Kubwa Express Way to Gado Nasco Way” where the officer noticed that he was being trailed and “executed a strategic maneuver, successfully evading the suspected assailants.”
In a Press Statement on Sunday night, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, for the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, refuted the viral media reports, saying “the attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.
The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.”
“The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic,” the police added, assuring residents of their safety while also calling on them to “report any suspicious activity to the nearest police division.”
