Reports indicate that inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Sokoto have declared Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as their president, according to The Sun.
Kanu was recently sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho after being found guilty on all seven counts of terrorism-related offences.
The charges included secessionist activities, acts of terrorism, membership of a banned group, the killing of security personnel, destruction of public property, concealment, and the importation of an unregistered radio transmitter.
While his lengthy trial was ongoing, Kanu had been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja. Following his sentencing, he was transferred to Sokoto Prison, where his arrival reportedly triggered a dramatic scene.
According to Daily Sun, inmates quickly rallied around Kanu, unanimously declaring him the “Prison President.” Witnesses described prisoners vying to shake his hand, praising him as “a man who speaks the truth without fear.”
