Nigeria is set to make a strong mark as the inaugural West Africa Para Games officially kicks off today at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
The opening ceremony, scheduled for Friday, will see the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, declare the six-day sporting spectacle open.
The Games will feature around 500 para-athletes from across West Africa, competing in 11 sports for national pride and personal achievement.
Organized collaboratively by the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), and the Ogun State Government, the event promises top-tier arrangements in security, medical care, accommodation, transportation, and hospitality.
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade called on residents to support Team Nigeria, highlighting the athletes’ dedication and courage.
“Hosting this first edition demonstrates Nigeria’s ability to stage international competitions and our commitment to celebrating inclusive sports,” said Olopade.
The Games also underscore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s sustained support for Nigerian sports through the RHINSE (Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria Sports Economy) campaign, which has helped bring multiple international events to the country over the past year.
Excitement is already building for the opening match, where Nigeria will face Cameroon in Amputee Football immediately after the ceremony, kicking off a week of high-level competition and inspiring athletic performances.
The West Africa Para Games not only showcase sporting excellence but also celebrate the resilience and heroism of the region’s special athletes, positioning Nigeria as a leader in inclusive sports on the continent.
