Lawmakers from Nigeria’s Southeast have issued a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
They argued that doing so would help restore peace, stability, and economic life in the region, which has suffered significant strain since Kanu’s continued detention.
Reading a carefully worded statement, by member representing Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency, Idu Igariwey, the 42-member caucus of Southeast lawmakers outlined the deepening challenges confronting communities across the region.
They cited persistent insecurity, intensifying agitation, and widespread disruptions to daily life as direct consequences of Kanu’s prolonged incarceration.
“Markets closures, reduced commercial activity, interrupted schooling, and general fear have become recurring features in many communities,” the lawmakers said, stressing that these conditions have imposed both economic and emotional hardship on residents.
Appealing to President Tinubu’s “presidential magnanimity,” the lawmakers argued that Nigeria has, in the past, overcome national divisions through decisive, compassionate leadership.
“Nigeria has, in the past, relied on presidential discretion to heal divisions,” they noted. “A similar approach could help consolidate peace and promote national unity.”
The caucus further maintained that Kanu’s release could open the door for broader dialogue between the Federal Government and key regional stakeholders—a step they believe is essential to achieving lasting peace in the Southeast.
As efforts continue toward a political resolution, the lawmakers called on residents of the region to remain calm and law-abiding. “We urge all residents of the Southeast to remain calm and law-abiding as we continue to work towards a peaceful resolution,” they said.
The appeal marked a significant political push toward de-escalation and national reconciliation.
By releasing Kanu, the lawmakers argue, President Tinubu has an opportunity to ease tensions, rebuild trust, and create an atmosphere conducive to meaningful dialogue and stability across the Southeast.
