The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed President Bola Tinubu’s recently submitted ambassadorial list, calling it “scandalous” and a reflection of anti-democratic tendencies.
Comrade Ini Ememobong, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, made this known in a press statement signed by himself on behalf of the party, emphasizing the urgency of correcting what it described as a “scandalous and completely unacceptable” set of appointments.
In a statement, the party criticized the inclusion of several nominees whom it described as “disgraced propagandists, characterless politicians, and public officials” widely perceived to have integrity deficits and questionable democratic credentials.
“While most Nigerians are seriously appalled by the inclusion of most of the nominees, they are not totally surprised, given the history and disposition of this administration,” the PDP said.
The party specifically singled out Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), whose tenure, the PDP argued, was marred by “double-speaks, flip-flops, and undelivered promises.”
They described his nomination as an “exemplar of a skewed reward system” that could undermine the credibility of future elections.
PDP warned that sending ambassadors with tainted political profiles abroad could harm Nigeria’s international reputation, stating: “The respect a country gets from other countries cannot be separated from the integrity profile and public perception of both the President and the Ambassadors.”
The party called on President Tinubu to withdraw the list and renominate individuals with “stellar democratic credentials and high moral standing,” capable of commanding global respect in their diplomatic assignments.
